Introduction
Dentures stabilization is a process that is required when wearing dentures has caused your gum and bone tissue to shrink in size. Over time, as the bone and gum tissue shrink, the dentures can become loose and you may experience problems with speaking and eating, as well as a degree of pain and discomfort caused by wearing poorly fitting dentures.
Denture stabilization methods
Many people wear dentures that require frequent adjustment. Patients with dentures are encouraged to visit their dentist on a regular basis to check the fit of the dentures. If the dentures have become loose, the dentist can modify the dentures or they recommend you get a new set of dentures.
By far the most effective method of denture stabilization is to have dentures that are supported by dental implants or mini implants. Dental implants are titanium rods that hold new dental bridges, dentures and crowns in place. Denture implants provide much greater retention and security than other types of denture and will improve your ability to eat and speak, as well as ensuring you have a great looking, healthy smile.
The procedure
The dental implants are fitted by cutting into the gum tissue, lifting a flap and drilling a hole in the jaw bone; the implant is then fitted into this socket and the implant is fixed into the hole. The gum tissue is then stitched up and the area is left to heal for over a period of 3-6 months. Once the area has healed, the dentist will fit your new set of dentures. Both removable and fixed dentures can be supported by dental implants. A whole set of dentures can be anchored by just a few dental implants, making it less expensive than having a complete set of dental implants and new crowns.
Mini dental implants are commonly used to secure dentures on the lower jaw; the mini implants are much smaller and finer than normal dental implants and may be suitable for those that don’t have sufficient bone mass to support larger implants. Mini dental implants can improve the function and aesthetic appeal of the smile and will also prevent bone loss.
The benefits
Denture stabilization has a range of benefits. It eradicates looseness and wobbling, improves speech, improves the ability to chew and eat and creates a more attractive, natural looking smile. Patients that undergo denture stabilization don’t have to worry about the appearance of their dentures and they don’t need to worry about their dentures coming loose or wobbling. Instead, they can forget about their teeth and enjoy the smile they’ve always wanted.
